What’s a mala? Well a mala, or another name for garland, is traditionally used for prayer and is meant to be used as a tool to count your mantra during meditation. Today, mala beads or necklaces can be worn as an accessory and are a wonderful way to wear your intention all day as a reminder of the goal you’re working towards in life.
Each mala necklace is made with 108 beads, using a combination of semi-precious gemstones and beads. The stones are threaded with a thin cord that is hand-knotted between each stone. You may ask, “why 108 beads?”. There are a few reasons, however I’m drawn to the breakdown of the larger number; as the numbers 1, 0, and 8 have their own specific meanings.
- 1 for God, Guru, and Higher Truth;
- 0 for completeness in spiritual practice;
- and 8 for eternity.
Some also say there are 108 feelings; 36 being related to the past, 36 to the present, and 36 to the future.
Choosing a mantra or affirmation is a very personal choice with its own specific meaning so focus on your intention that you are setting for yourself that day, week, or month. I’m a big believer of fate and personal journeys, meaning no one has the same path in life. Therefore each mantra and intention will be different for each person.
If you need help with choosing a mantra, here are a few suggestions and malas that might be right for you:
Once you’ve chosen your mantra or affirmation, you can use the mala necklace during your meditation practice. Holding the mala in one hand with your thumb and middle finger, use the 108 beads as a guide on counting how many times you repeat your mantra. Move each bead individually slowly through your fingers until you’ve counted to 108, making this a full rotation.
You can also choose to wear the mala throughout your day. Notice each time you glance or touch the necklace. Use that as a sign to silently speak your mantra or affirmation. You’re now using your mala necklace as a reminder of your daily intention.
